I was born in Australia, then grew up in Malaysia and Scotland. As a hybrid of my Chinese-Malaysian mother and my Scottish father, I like to think I have inherited the best bits of both of these wonderful cultures! I have settled in Scotland and been here since the age of 12, but I still go back to Malaysia every year to visit family.
I qualified as a dentist in 1996 but I knew that general practice was not where I would stay as orthodontics has always been a passion for me. After 10 years of postgraduate training, I took up the position of Consultant Orthodontist at Borders General Hospital/ Edinburgh Dental Institute and held that post for 4 years.
I moved out of the hospital service and came to Aberdeen in 2010 when I became Clinical Director at The Orthodontic Clinic. In 2014, my business partner, Ivin Tan, and I bought over the clinic and in the autumn of 2018, we moved our practice to the brand new premises where we are today.
I'm very proud of the clinic and all our team. It's a dream job to be able every day to do what I do - I love giving patients the smile that they've always deserved. Actually when I think back to my own experience, I remember being really inspired my own orthodontist when I was 12 years old having braces.
All I remember thinking was that I wanted to be just like him. I was amazed at what braces could do, and how he was able to help me transform my smile. From there, my ambition was to not just become a dentist, but to specialise in orthodontics to be able to do just what he did, and be able to create amazing smiles! I became a dentist at the age of 23, then kept going with my postgraduate studies to become an orthodontist at age 30. I have never looked back, it’s a wonderful profession.
“Patient care is our number one goal. I’m so happy to run a clinic where both patients and staff feel welcome, comfortable and valued.”
Ivin has a varied business background, having owned design and printing companies in the past. She has owned several businesses, mostly based in South-East Asia and still runs a couple of these, although is less hands on and more remote in her directorship, as she has been UK based now for over a decade.
Although Ivin's specialty training has been in Art and Design, she has a keen business acumen and her motivational spirit is one that filters through to the whole team. Ivin is co-owner of the clinic together with Dr Lisa Currie and she leads our team, keeping us inspired through her vision for our clinic.

Orthodontic Therapists are registered with the General Dental Council and work alongside a specialist orthodontist under prescription. They are able to carry out procedures such as changing of arch wires, bonding and debonding (removal) of fixed braces.
The role of an Orthodontic therapist is to help a specialist orthodontist. They will not do any treatment planning of patients, but instead will work under the supervision of a specialist to their treatment plan. This will free up surgery time and allow more of our NHS patients to be treated, which will help reduce waiting lists and ensure that braces can be fitted quicker for our patients, allowing more quality time being spent with patients.
